BLOGGER REVIEWEnjoy delicious Chuncheon dak galbi from Uncle Jang's, one of the more popular no-frills budget Korean restaurants in KL By KampungBoyCityGal Thanks to Chris whose glowing review sparked our interest, we decided to sample Uncle Jang's famous Chuncheon dak galbi dish at its Ampang branch.
Dak galbi is a popular South Korean dish where marinated chicken cubes are stir-fried in a go chu jang (chilli pepper paste) sauce together with cabbage, sweet potato, scallions, onions and tteok (rice cake) on a hot plate. Dak Galbi originates from Chuncheon, Gangwan Province; hence the dish is also called Chuncheon chicken (春川炒辣鸡). Dak galbi can be enjoyed on its own or wrapped in lettuce leaves for a fresh and clean taste. It is also known as the “commoners’ galbi” or “university student’s galbi” because of its huge portion and affordable price tag. Occasionally, tummy fillers like cheese, ramen, udon and rice are thrown in. You can choose to sit on the floor cushions or chairs at this popular no-frills restaurant. Food is served on a cast iron hot plate in the centre of the table. We were there early but the place soon filled up with other patrons – mainly Korean diners, so that's a good sign.
This simple, neat and budget Korean diner offers a bilingual menu and specialises in dak galbi (spicy, RM22 or non-spicy, RM19) along with other simple dishes such as samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) and dakgyetang (kimchi chicken soup with rice). By the way, “dak” is pronounced as “duck” and ironically means “chicken” in Korean. They have a step-by-step guide on how to prepare the dak galbi dish but fret not, as the server will do most of the cooking. Just sit back and relax!
Once we were seated, we were served a fine range of complimentary condiments such as cabbages, kim chi and pickled onions. We ordered both the spicy and non-spicy dak galbi, plus an order of tteok, which was complimentary as we downloaded a voucher from the restaurant's Facebook page, as well as some ramen (RM6).It took some time for the chicken to be cooked thoroughly but there was something special about a group of us eating out of the same pan. It was real fun! When we were left with about a quarter of the food, we signalled to the server to add rice, seaweed and greens (RM6) to the leftover dak galbi. The result was the best part of the meal – very delicious fried rice! One of the better budget Korean restaurants in KL, Uncle Jang serves delicious and outstanding Chuncheon dak galbi and we love it to bits! The price is reasonable – we paid less than RM15 per person. We’ll definitely be going back.
